2025 Palliative Care Volunteer Conference

‘Wrap-Up’

Date: Monday 18 & Tuesday 19 August 2025
Venue: Rydges Sydney Central, 28 Albion St, Surry Hills

What a remarkable two days we shared at the 2025 Palliative Care Volunteer Conference, held on Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 August at Rydges Sydney Central. Representing our team were Volunteers Jen Lohs, Jenni Nichols, Bev Peachman, Robyn Newton, and Teresa King, along with Volunteer Coordinator, Amy O’Donnell—all grateful for the opportunity to attend such a meaningful event.

With a full program of learning, connection, and reflection, it was a privilege for the six of us to gather with fellow volunteers and coordinators from across NSW.

The conference offered something for everyone—whether it was exploring ‘The power of life story writing‘, engaging in ‘Art and Connection in Palliative Care‘, or developing a deeper understanding of ‘Trauma-informed Care‘.
One volunteer reflected: “Although very out of my comfort zone, I attended the Art and Connection in Palliative Care… it was useful to be subjected to the many different forms this can take – even though we’ve been using these mediums for most of our lives.

Day two included the deeply resonant session on ‘Spiritual Care – Heart and Soul Matters‘, as well as the powerful and sensitive workshop on ‘Talking to Children About Dying‘. These sessions offered valuable tools for supporting others with compassion and clarity.

The second day also featured inspiring keynote speakers and time to share insights and experiences. As one attendee beautifully put it: “It was the shared collective wisdom gained across each unique space, activity and discussion that I found the most rewarding… the generosity of spirit was humbling.”

Above all, the conference fostered genuine connection. “It was lovely to spend time together with our volunteers afterwards, reflecting on what we learned and sharing our own stories. It was a real team-building experience!”

We offer our thanks to Palliative Care NSW for organising and hosting such a wonderful event, and to Friends of Palliative Care Inc., whose generous sponsorship made it possible for our five volunteers to attend.
